FAQS – For Investigators
What is FRI’s mission?

Friends Research Institute promotes health and well-being through research, treatment, and grants administration.

What is the focus of the organization?

Established in 1955, FRI provides efficient, personal, and comprehensive services in the administration of research, currently managing more than 100 biomedical and psychosocial research studies throughout the United States. Areas of research include (but are not limited to) HIV/AIDS, cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders (including epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, etc.), schizophrenia, and substance abuse.

How can FRI help me with my research?

FRI provides efficient, personal, comprehensive services in the administration of research activities. These services include scientific administration (research compliance), financial administration (budgeting, tracking, reporting), and human resources administration (personnel management, payroll, direct deposit, clerical support, liability insurance, worker’s compensation, 1099s, W2s)

Note: Because FRI handles the administrative and back-office functions, investigators are free to focus on their research.

Good service is important to me. Sometimes my university takes weeks, even months to respond to my requests and questions or to approve spending. What is FRI’s service record?

You can count on a return phone call from a “real person” in 24 hours or less! FRI takes great pride in providing researchers with the highest quality administrative support, enabling scientists to concentrate on their work. Each Principal Investigator receives a monthly report of account activity from us. Budgets are monitored closely, and instant account balance information is just a phone call away.

What is FRI’s indirect rate?

FRI’s federal indirect rate for grants on the East Coast is between 15.60% and 57.80%. The West Coast indirect rate is 34.80%. The indirect rate for Investigators who receive funds from pharmaceutical companies, foundations, or private donors are negotiated on an individual basis.

What is FRI’s fringe benefit rate?

FRI’s fringe benefit rate is 24%. Fringe benefits include FICA, health insurance, education reimbursement, and retirement.
