Dr. Steven Carswell Selected as the Next President of FRI

FRI is pleased to announce that Dr. Steven Carswell was selected by the FRI Board of Directors to serve as the next President of FRI starting on September 1, 2024.  Dr. Carswell is currently the Vice President and a Senior Research Scientist at FRI who has worked for the organization for over 27 years.  In his position of Vice President, Dr. Carswell has served as the Chair of the Executive Management Committee, along with the President, Chief Operating Officer, and Medical Director, and is jointly responsible for the development of short and long-term strategic plans, policies, and procedures to improve FRI’s research, clinical, and grants management infrastructure.  Dr. Carswell also serves as the Chair of the Human Resource Advisory Committee, Financial Conflict of Interest Officer, and Chief Diversity Officer, and he serves on the 401(k) Retirement Plan and the Investment Review Committees.  Over the years, he has also served as the Chair of the Research Interviewer Training Manual Committee and on the Grievance and Quality Improvement Committees.  Dr. Carswell began his research career at FRI as a research assistant and, shortly thereafter, he received a National Institute on Drug Abuse pre-doctoral diversity supplement award through FRI while attending graduate school at American University in Washington, DC.  He is currently a Principal Investigator on three National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded research studies that are focused on developing digital interventions designed to reduce health disparities and improve treatment access and the delivery of treatment services to vulnerable and disadvantaged populations with substance use disorders.

In addition to being the next President of FRI, Dr. Carswell is also the Managing Partner of COG Analytics (COG), a research and technology company formed in partnership with FRI that specializes in the development of research, clinical, and consumer-based technology products designed to improve public health and reduce health disparities.
