Kelly Merkel is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Maryland Board Approved Clinical Supervisor (LCPC-S). She previously worked for FRI as an Assistant Clinical Coordinator at Epoch Counseling Center. While working in that capacity, she was involved in the treatment of substance use disorders through Avatar online counseling with researchers from FRI to provide remote therapeutic services.
Upon her return to FRI, Ms. Merkel is currently working as a Project Manager on two NIMHD-funded studies using innovative technology to assist with the treatment of substance use disorders. She is working with Drs. Gordon and Carswell on these projects. The first study “Continuing Care App for Probationers and Parolees with Substance Use Disorders” seeks to complete the development of a continuing care mobile app and conduct a randomized controlled trial to assess efficacy among clients on probation or parole who are enrolled in outpatient substance use treatment. The app is designed to meet the recovery and personal support needs of probationers and parolees with substance use disorders. The second study “The Daily Progress System – A Recovery Support Tool to Reduce Health Disparities in Outpatient Substance Use Treatment” seeks to develop a mobile-friendly, web-based software program designed to improve treatment engagement and retention among clients on probation or parole who are enrolled in outpatient substance use treatment.
