Kalie grew up in sunny Los Angeles before moving to the even sunnier San Diego, where she earned her undergraduate degree in international studies-political science and history from the University of California, San Diego. While at UCSD, she also had the opportunity to work in many research environments, where she discovered her love for addiction studies. Her past projects have included exploring various pharmacological treatments for drug and alcohol dependent rats, with particular interest in behaviors resulting from the use of a self-administration model, rather than other modes of administration. She also has experience working in clinical research settings, where she studied the correlation between nicotine dependence on other substance use disorders. Kalie is currently pursuing an M.P.H in sociomedical sciences with a certificate in the epidemiology of population mental health from Columbia University.
At FRI, Kalie is working as a research assistant on NIDA-funded studies in Dr. Karli Hochstatter’s research portfolio that aim to better understand mental health and substance use risks among the social networks of people who died of drug overdose, and to improve the delivery of health services to those bereaved by overdose.
